An 8-bit Flash-based microcontroller is the PIC16F716-I/P. The PIC16C5X and PIC12FXXX devices are upwardly compatible with this powerful (200 millisecond instruction execution) yet simple-to-program (just 35 single word instructions) CMOS flash-based microcontroller. The PIC16F716 has an improved capture/compare/PWM function, 2 additional timers, and 4 channels of 8-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion. An analog input signal can be converted to an 8-bit binary representation using an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This gadget makes use of multiplexed analog inputs that are sampled and held in a single circuit. The converter's input is joined to the sample and hold device's output. The converter approximates successively to produce an 8-bit binary result, which it saves in the ADC result register.
