Sound waves are mechanical vibrations in a solid, liquid or gas. Ultrasound is the same, but at a frequency higher than the range audible to humans (viz. 1 Hz to 16 kHz). The lowest ultrasonic frequency is normally taken to be 20 kHz (i.e. 20 000 cycles per second).
