A capacitor is a device consisting of two conducting "plates" separated by an insulating material. When the plates have a potential difference between them, the plates will hold equal and opposite charges. The capacitance C of a capacitor separating charges +Q and \u2212Q, with voltage V across it, is defined as C=QV.
