good quad-
core CPU for
gaming, and he can always upgrade to a faster CPU with hyper-threading in a couple years if he feel like it...for 1080p i'd say an i7-6700 and a GTX 1060 for
games that are out right now is a
better choice, but in the long run,
games will become more and more taxing on the GPU ...

If you're looking for 1080p on AAA games you're probably good with an i5 6500 until 2020 or 2021 when the next generation of consoles comes in for two reasons - console specs and bottlenecks. That said, it's your money and your priorities. I can only recommend.
