At the far end of the room, you'll find the Isotope Containment Terminal which will be used to
open a
door, to where the final sample is, U-238. Now that the
door is unlocked, leave the room and enter a newly opened
door, which is to the right of those initial stairs you climbed.

Gold can only be found in Cambridge Polymer Labs. It is locked in the top floor room (C3), accessible from the hole in the ceiling in the room on the opposite side of the lab section or from the Expert locked terminal outside the door.
