STMicroelectronics plans to double its micro-electromechanical sensor production capacity to three million sensors per day by the end of the year because of strong demand, the company reported.
Benedetto Vigna, group vice president and general manager of ST's MEMS, sensors, and high performance analog division, said ST was "beefing up our manufacturing machine" to encourage the adoption of MEMS into the healthcare, industrial, and automotive markets.
"ST is well-positioned to make micro-machined sensors ubiquitous in all domains of life," Vigna said.
ST produces MEMS at its facilities in Agrate and Catania in Italy, Rousset and Crolles in France, and has assembly and testing in Kirkop, Malta, and Calamba, Philippines.
ST's MEMS sensors are used in smart phones, tablets computers, personal media players, game consoles, digital still cameras, and remote controls. Acceleration sensors are also used in laptop hard-disk drives, airbags, and navigation systems.
