Semiconductor Revenue Grew Nearly 31 Percent in 2010

Pent-up semiconductor demand, caused by the 2009 global recession and inventory replenishment, resulted in worldwide semiconductor revenue growing 30.9 percent to $299.4 billion in 2010, according to researcher Gartner Inc.

Gartner reported that it was the largest annual dollar increase for the semiconductor industry in history as sales grew $70 billion in 2010 from 2009.

Gartner noted that the top 25 semiconductor suppliers accounted for 69.1 percent of semiconductor industry revenue in 2010. For the 19th consecutive year, Intel was the top semiconductor company as it grew its sales 25.6 percent to nearly $42 billion. However, Intel lost market share in 2010 as its share declined from 14.6 percent in 2009 to 14 percent in 2010, according to Gartner.

Samsung was the second largest chipmaker, as its revenue increased 58 percent from $17.7 billion in 2009 to $28 billion in 2010. Samsung's growth was due to strong demand for DRAM and NAND memory. Memory ICs accounted for about 80 percent of the company's sales in 2010, according to Gartner. Its share of the chip market in 2010 was 9.4 percent.

Toshiba was the third largest semiconductor company with sales of $12.3 billion, up 28.7 percent from 2009. The company grew its NAND flash memory business for mobile devices, as well as its discrete and optical electronics device businesses. Its market share was 4.1 percent.

"The industry-wide upturn was due to the combination of pent-up demand that had built in the wake of the worldwide economic recession, and rebuilding of semiconductor inventories that were significantly depleted during the recession," said Peter Middleton, principal analyst at Gartner. He added that the chip market actually began to grow in the second half of 2009 and continued "almost frantically" during the first half of 2010 as demand soared, prices increased, and lead times stretched.
