Always read resistors from left to right. - Resistors never start with a metallic band on the left. If you have a resistor with a gold or silver band on one end, you have a 5% or 10% tolerance resistor. Calculating Resistor Values

For example, a resistor has the following coloured markings; Yellow Violet Red = 4 7 2 = 4 7 x 102 = 4700\u03a9 or 4k7 Ohm. The fourth and fifth bands are used to determine the percentage tolerance of the resistor.
